Questions related to the installing jv16 PowerTools
Q: What kind of registry entries jv16 PowerTools adds
to the registry during the installation?
A: jv16 PowerTools just register a the .jvb file type
so you can execute jv16 PowerTools script files by double clicking
them. The program itself doesn't add any other registry entries.
Also, you can remove the .jvb file type's registration from
Settings > More Advanced.
Q: What registry entries jv16 PowerTools installer creates?
A: It registers the .jvb file type. This is done with
the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jv16PT.jvb
Q: What is the difference between the installation packages
(One with installer, the .zip and the .rar archive) ?
A: Basically nothing. The installer gives you more options
to install the files but the files are the same. The installer
also automatically registers the .jvb file type for jv16 PowerTools
script files.
Before using jv16 PowerTools
Q: Can jv16 PowerTools do any harm to my computer?
A: Yes. It does what you tell it to do. The program is
like an axe, if you know how to use it you can use it as a powerful
tool but if you don't really know how to use it you can someday
hit your leg with it.
Q: What does the disclaimer in the license
agreement really mean?
A: It basically means that what ever you do with jv16
PowerTools you are on your own. If you manage to destroy something
with it we cannot be blamed. For more info, read the license
agreement well. If you don't agree with this policy,
do not use jv16 PowerTools.
Questions related to the basic usage of
jv16 PowerTools
Q: The program always asks an username and password,
what is the password?
A: You have most likely triggered some of the program's
security feature. Most likely you have first run the program
and after that moved it to another directory or another computer,
this is not allowed. If you want to move the program to another
directory or copy it to other computer(s) do not start the program
after you have downloaded it. This problem may also occur if
your computer's name contains some invalid characters.
Anyway, you can solve the problem by first uninstalling it and
then reinstalling it. Installing it over the top of the non-working
version might not fix it.
Q: What are those little images on the front all items
in the registry manager?
A: They indicate whether the item is safe to delete or
not. A green means that the item should be safe to delete, a
red means that removing the item can very dangerous and a grey
question mark means that jv16 PowerTools doesn't know.
Q: Why some lists has those little boxes where one must
put a tick to and some list don't ?
A: jv16 PowerTools uses this for safety reasons. Every
time you tick an item you know that you are about to do some
procedure to it, such as to remove it.
Q: What are those 'Unknown Entries' ?
A: They are items that jv16 PowerTools can't recognize,
this doesn't mean however that they are safe to remove.
Q: Are 'Unknown Entries' or items marked as 'N/A' always
safe to remove?
A: No.
Q: Why I can just remove items and not modify them?
A: Modifying, for example renaming, some items might
cause trouble. For example, the software which entries you modified
might not work properly anymore.
Q: I could translate jv16 PowerTools to my language,
would you be interested in adding it to the official distribution
package?
A: Yes, of course. See the default language file (\Languages\English.lng)
for more information.
Q: How can I know which items to remove?
A: You just have to know it. If you don't know what to
remove, don't remove anything, that's always the safest option.
Q: If something goes wrong, can I restore my backups
from DOS?
A: Many times, yes. If you can access the backup directory
(usually \jv16 PowerTools\Backups) you can restore the backups.
The easiest way to restore you registry backups is to run the
RestoreAll.bat which is found in the backup directory. If that
doesn't work you must manually restore all the .reg files by
importing them back to the registry.
Questions related to the Registry manager
Q: Are items marked with "N/A" always safe
to remove?
A: No. There really is no general rules how to identify
items that are safe to remove.
Q: I can't recognize any of these items. What can I do?
A: Don't do anything, if you don't know what those items
are then it's always safe to leave them alone.
Questions related to the Registry Cleaner
Q: What is the Registry Cleaner?
A: Registry Cleaner is a tool that automatically finds invalid
registry entries.
Q: What are threads ?
A: The thread number represents the amount of registry analyser
units that are currently running. When all of them are finished,
i.e. threads are '0', Registry Cleaner is finished.
Q: When I use the Registry Cleaner the Threads value
decreases while all the other values increase. Is this normal?
A: Yes. Threads are the Registry Cleaner components which
check some part of your registry. When the component has finished
its check it will terminate itself and then the Threads value
will decrease.
Q: What are ignored entries?
A: Entries that were ignored based on the Ignore List.
Q: What is the Ignore List?
A: Ignore List contains names of programs and some general
keywords that jv16 PowerTools' Registry Cleaner should ignore
just to be sure. This is done because some programs tend to
create registry entries that look very much invalid but which
are, in fact, used by this software.
Q: How I can modify the Ignore List?
A: The default ignore list is a simple text file \Settings\Ignore\RegistryIgnoreList.dat.
You can edit it with any text editor, such as notepad. If you
want to be sure you keep the ignored words you added even after
updating the software you should create a new file under that
dir. For example, create a file called "MyAdditions.dat"
and add your own custom ignore list words to that file.
Q: While running the Invalid entries value was something
like 500 and after the Registry Cleaner was finished the info
panel said that there were only 400 items. Where did 100 items
go?
A: Due performance issues the Registry Cleaner does not
do a duplicate check on the items it founds. I.e. the Registry
Cleaner can find the same item many times but after it's finished
it will remove the duplicate entries from the list and therefore
the amount of items seems to be decreased.
Q: Why the progress bar keeps going on, why it doesn't
show the progress of the Registry Cleaner?
A: In order to do that jv16 PowerTools would have to know
how many registry entries its going to analyse and it just doesn't
know that beforehand.
Q: Why the Time Remaining is greyed out?
A: You must run the Registry Cleaner for five times before
it starts to work. This is because it estimates the remaining
time based on your previous scans. The Time Remaining feature
is only available if you do a full scan.
Q: I have removed a few registry entries with the registry
cleaner. Still, every time I run the registry cleaner again
it finds the same entries again, why?
A: There can be many reasons. But most likely the registry
entries are automatically recreated by the operating system
or by some third party software. Or the entries could also be
protected so you can't remove or modify them.
Questions about the File tool
Q: I would like to just mass rename many files, not to
search for them. Is there any easy way to add the files to the
list without actually making the program to search for them?
A: Yes. The program supports drag and drop, you can just
drag the files from your desktop or from explorer to the main
window or to the file tool and the program knows how to add
the files to the list.
Q: I have done a duplicate search.
Can I somehow automatically select the oldest files so that
only one file is left alone and the duplicates are removed?
A: Yes. After you have used the
duplicate search a "smart selection" feature appears
to the Select menu. With Smart Selection you can select files
based on them last accessed date or the last modified date.
Q: I have done a duplicate file search. May I now remove
all the duplicates?
A: No you can't, if you still wish to be able to use
your computer, that is. Duplicate files are not safe to remove
just like that. See more information from here.
Q: I want to clear my temporary Internet files (File
tool > Tools > Clear temporary Internet files) but I would
like to save a few cookies. Is this possible?
A: Yes. You can define these cookies in the \Settings\Ignore\Cookies.dat
file and the temporary Internet files cleaner will ignore them.
Q: Why doesn't the file tool find all my .tmp files even
if I have checked the "find only temp files" option?
A: That option means that the program will look for files
that are most likely safe to remove. This means that it will
only list files of specific extension which haven't been used
in a few days.
Q: The "find only temp files" option searches
the files with the search word "*.tmp;*.temp;*.gid;*.chk;*.~*;*.bak;".
Is it possible to modify the default file extensions it searches?
A: Yes it. The temp file extensions are defined in the
settings.dat, you can modify it from there if you wish.
Q: Why does the progress bar of the file tool behave
strange?
A: When you do a search for the first time the progress
bar doesn't know how much data there will be, that's why it
can't show you the progress in an exact way. But the program
learns at the same time you use it, so the next time you search
from the same directory the progress bar should be able to work
much better.
Q: Every time I move my mouse over the More functions...
button the menu automatically pops up. Can this be prevented?
A: Yes. This is a feature and it is meant for making
the working with the file tool faster. However, if you don't
like this feature you can disable by writing "QuickMoreFunc=False"
under the Settings.dat's [FileTool] section.
Questions about more advanced issues
Q: The Ctrl + Shift shortcut is a system wide shortcut
it my system. Can I disable it from the PowerTools?
A: Yes. Just write "CtrlShift=True" under [Disable
Shortcuts] in Settings.dat. Note that after this you can still
access the Ctrl + Shift menu with Ctrl + <.
Q: Is it possible to disable the user defined keyboard
shortcuts?
A: Yes. Add "UserDefined=True" under [Disable
Shortcuts] in Settings.dat.
Q: Is it possible to adjust the program's settings from
the command line?
A: Yes, there are many ways but you can do this with
the -Execute command line parameter and Set console command.
For example, you could adjust the option in the question above
with the following command line:
jv16 PowerTools.exe -Execute Set "Disable Shortcuts"
"UserDefined" "True"; Terminate;
